We can’t wait to welcome students back to school on Monday, August 22! As the first day of school approaches, we hope to provide you with the important information and dates needed to help ensure a smooth transition and start to the school year.
Shifting Gears Transition Program for Seventh Grade Students – Registration is still open!
August 9, 10, and 11 - AM and PM Sessions
Registration for Shifting Gears, Kilmer Middle School’s summer transition program for rising seventh graders is available on the Kilmer Website. Shifting Gears is a half day transition program for ALL rising seventh grade students at Kilmer Middle School. Through fun activities and informative lessons, the program will focus on helping students with the transition to middle school and alleviate concerns students may have. Rising seventh graders who attend will receive their FCPS laptop for the school year during this program. There are six half-day sessions available this summer. Students attend one session. Transportation will be provided from our feeder elementary schools. Eighth Grade Open House, Tuesday, August 16 from 3:00-5:00 pm
Seventh Grade Open House, Thursday, August 18 from 3:00-5:00 pm
During our Open House events, students have the opportunity to pick up their class schedule, submit updates/changes to Emergency Care and Health Information forms, receive their FCPS laptop, meet Kilmer teachers, and locate their classes throughout the building. The clinic will also be open to drop off medications. Parents can also update or make changes to their child’s emergency care or health information via [email protected]
If you are unable to attend the Open House events, the building will be open on Friday, Aug. 19 from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm for schedule and laptop pick up. Student schedules will also be visible in SIS ParentVue and SIS StudentVUE beginning Thursday, August 18.
Virtual Parent and Student Information Session, August 15 and 17 at 5:00 pm
Leading up to our Open House dates, there will be two virtual parent and student information sessions by grade level scheduled for Monday, August 15 at 5:00 pm for eighth grade families and Wednesday, August 17 at 5:00 pm for seventh grade families. During this session, we will share important information to assist students with the first day of school including school expectations, understanding the Kilmer bell schedule, technology updates, and what to expect at the Open House the following day. The zoom link will be sent closer to the date of the sessions.
Class Schedules and Student Information System (SIS) ParentVue
Students will receive a copy of their class schedule at the Seventh and Eighth Grade Open Houses. Class schedules will also be visible in SIS StudentVue and ParentVue beginning Thursday, August 18, 2022. SIS ParentVue Accounts provide access to view your child’s student information including attendance, report cards, class schedules, gradebook, course history, discipline, health, and school information, establishing another form of communication between home and school. If you had an active account from the 2021-2022 school year, you can continue to use this account for the 2022-2023 school year. A general school supply list is listed below. Some classes may require additional materials. Please use this list to take advantage of Virginia’s school supply tax holiday, August 5-7.

All students will also receive an FCPS laptop. Laptops will be distributed to seventh graders during each Shifting Gears Session, August 9 -11. Eighth grade laptops will be distributed at Open House on Tuesday, August 16. Any seventh grader who does not receive a laptop at Shifting Gears will receive a laptop at the Seventh Grade Open House on Thursday, August 18. If you are unable to attend our August events, laptops will be distributed on Friday, August 19 from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm or on the first day of school, August 22, 2022. Laptops are not required prior to the start of school.
Lunch Accounts/Free and Reduced-Price Meal Applications now required
The extension of the no-cost meals benefit to all students expired at the end of the 2021-22 school year, meaning families must submit an application and be approved to be eligible for free and reduced-price meals for the 2022-23 school year. The application for the Free and Reduced-Price Meal program is now available online.
Green/Blue Bell Schedule
All middle schools implement a A/B block schedule. This means students go to half of their classes each day, odd period classes on one day and even period classes the next. Classes are 85 minutes long with the exception of 3rd period. 3rd period is everyday for 45 minutes in order to accommodate equal class sizes and teacher planning on each day. For Kilmer, we refer to A days (1, 3, 5, 7, 9) as Green Day and B days (2, 3, 4, 6, 8) as Blue. All students participate in 4th period Advisory and 5th period Learning Seminar (PAWS). The Kilmer bell schedule is located on the Kilmer Website.
New Immunization Requirement for Seventh Grade Students
Effective July 1, 2021, all students entering seventh grade are required to receive one dose of each of the following immunizations prior to the beginning of school: Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis booster (Tdap), and Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY). Seventh grade students cannot begin school in August without proper Tdap and Meningococcal documentation. Parents can check to see if their child is compliant for all immunizations by logging into SIS ParentVue and clicking on the Health Immunizations tab. Parents should submit a copy of their child’s updated immunization records to @email . If a student is missing a required immunization, parent communication via email and phone calls will continue until all students are in compliance.
Lockers are optional. Students will carry a backpack with them throughout the day to hold their laptop which they will need in all classes. Students will be able to request a locker during the second week of school. This will give students a chance to know what they need in each class and how long their transitions between classes take in order to determine if a hall locker is needed. Students will have PE lockers and students with instruments will have a music locker.
All middle schools are implementing an “Away for the Day” cell phone policy. Students with cell phones will keep their cell phones off and away in their backpacks throughout the school day. If a parent/guardian has an urgent message for their student, they can call the main office at 703-846-8800 and we will get the message to the student.
Mask wearing became optional for all as of March 1. Masks are not required during low and medium COVID-19 community levels. Some students and staff may choose to continue to wear a mask for personal or health reasons and others may not. Please talk with your children about your expectations for their mask use at school and remind them to support their classmates and teachers’ choices. FCPS will be regularly reviewing our masking practices in line with updates to national, state and local health recommendations.
Monday, August 22 - First day of school
Classes begin at 7:30 am and end at 2:15 pm.
Wednesday, September 14 - Back to School Night, 5:00 - 7:00 pm
On this night, parents will have an opportunity to meet their child’s teachers, school counselor, and administrators, as well as learn about classroom policies and the curriculum their child will be learning in each course.
