4/27/2020 - Kilmer Distance Learning Hub and BBCU Reminders

Printable Version

April 27, 2020

Dear Kilmer Families,

We are looking forward to our synchronous classes on Wednesday and Friday this week. Students also have an opportunity to connect with their teachers during Office Hours on Tuesday and Thursday. At this time, students should have received a unique Blackboard Collaborate Link for each teacher to their fcpsschools.net email to access synchronous learning and office hours. Below please find information that will help your student be successful in our Distance Learning Environment.

Kilmer Distance Learning Hub

To streamline communication for parents and students, we developed the Kilmer Distance Learning Hub. The purpose of the Kilmer Distance Learning Hub is to provide one place for students to access all course information and to assist students with organization in a Distance Learning environment. Here is the link to the Kilmer Distance Learning Hub. Please note, the Kilmer Distance Learning Hub is housed in the student’s FCPS Google Drive so your student will need to log in to his/her account to access it.

We strongly recommend that students Bookmark the Distance Learning Hub for quick and easy access.

Your child’s school counselor will send the link to the Kilmer Distance Learning Hub to their fcpsschools.net email this evening. Please encourage your child to access this resource for class information and weekly reminders.

Blackboard Collaborate Ultra Links

Click here for a step by step guide on how to access Blackboard Collaborate Links.

Please note that students will need to expand the email to see the link. For some students, they will need to click on the three gray dots on the bottom left hand corner of the email.

Please view this video for help in finding and using the new link.

The same, student-specific link will be used for all classroom instruction and teacher office hours moving forward. To assist students with staying organized, each student should cut and paste each link into the distance learning schedule, a fillable document also posted on the Kilmer website.

Office Hours

All teachers will hold Office Hours every Tuesday and Thursday. We strongly encourage students to “pop into” their teacher’s office hours tomorrow to make sure they can access all the Blackboard Collaborate Ultra Links.

We are very much looking forward to this week. Please take care of yourselves, your families, and each other.

Sincerely,

Kilmer Administrative Team

4/21/2020 - Information on Unique Blackboard Collaborate Links

Printable Version

Dear Kilmer Families,

Thank you for your patience with us as FCPS continues to refine our Distance Learning practices.  We want to assure you that the Kilmer MS staff is committed to providing a secure, engaging, and positive learning environment for all of our students. We are very proud of the ways our teachers have continued to connect with students, support curriculum access, and provide learning opportunities despite the technology challenges. We have heard from many parents and teachers highlighting positive stories of reconnection. So, while we haven’t been able to be synchronous on Wednesdays and Fridays yet, we are confident that beginning next week our Kilmer staff will be ready to resume live instruction. We can’t wait to reconnect with all our students!

Moving forward, students will be sent unique Blackboard Collaborate Links from each one of their teachers to their fcpsschools.net email to access synchronous learning and office hours. To assist students with staying organized, each student should cut and paste each link into the distance learning schedule, a fillable document located on the Kilmer website.  Please have your child delete all previous Blackboard Collaborate links.

In preparation for synchronous learning on a safe platform, the Kilmer MS staff will be engaged in training while also maintaining asynchronous learning access for all students.  Students should continue to access learning in an asynchronous environment tomorrow, Wednesday, April 22 and Friday, April 24.

As our teachers participate in training and prepare their synchronous learning sites this week, teachers may reach out to students to join them in an office hours type setting to “practice” accessing and using the new links.  We expect to have all staff and students set up for success in synchronous sessions beginning next week with students engaging in office hours on Tuesday, April 28 and their synchronous class schedule on Wednesday, April 29.

Please note the third quarter has been extended until Friday, May 1, 2020. Students can continue to work with their teachers to complete missing assignments and complete reassessments through next week.

What should my child do this week?

  • Review Google Classroom, email, and Blackboard 24-7 for asynchronous activities and updates, including directions to access secure Blackboard Collaborate Ultra classes
  • Teachers have posted pre-recorded lessons to either their Blackboard page or google classroom as well as learning activities and assignments for students to complete.
  • Complete any outstanding assignments from the 3rd quarter and participate in retakes, as needed.
  • Reach out to teachers, school counselors, or an administrator with questions.

We will be offering parent information sessions this week to provide you with recommendations for how to support your child with this most recent change and preparing them for next week. The sessions will be on Thursday, April 23 at 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM and Friday, April 24 at 8:30 AM. We will be holding the parent information sessions using Blackboard Collaborate Ultra and will send the link out Wednesday afternoon. Please note each session has a maximum of 250 participants. The sessions will cover the same information. Please plan to only participate in one session. We will record the sessions as well.

Please take care of yourselves and of each other.

Sincerely,

Amy Miller

Principal

Learning at Home: Support for Families

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is providing information to support parents and students as they prepare to participate in distance learning beginning Tuesday, April 14. The new webpage offers simple strategies for parents to help students get ready to learn and stay engaged and focused. Additionally, since the shift to distance learning is occurring when family routines are already in flux, the new webpage includes links to a variety of resources that can help ease the transition. Examples include social-emotional wellness supports, guidance for families without reliable access to technology, and a summary of who to contact with questions. Information regarding support for special education students and English language learners is also included.

Building Closed

FCPS school buildings remain closed and students are not able to clean out lockers or pick up items from classrooms at this time. FCPS is working very closely with the Fairfax County Health Department and following their guidelines to ensure everyone’s health and safety. Right now, the only time a family can make an appointment to enter the building is for an essential item such as medication. Please know that the all the teachers are very aware that students' items are still at school and they will accommodate for that. As soon as we are able to arrange for students to pick up their items we will let you know. Thank you for your patience.

Refunds

Refunds for field trips are being processed and families will receive refund checks in the mail. Please note, there are many refunds that need to be processed and each one needs to be processed individually. It will likely take through May to complete all refunds.

Please take good care and we will be in touch again soon.

Sincerely,

Amy Miller

Principal

4/6/2020 Includes Printable Schedules and Distance Learning Plan

Dear Kilmer Families,

We hope you all are doing well. We certainly miss seeing you at school! The Kilmer teachers and staff have spent this past week preparing for Distance Learning and although it is not the same as being in the classroom with your students, we are all looking forward to resuming instruction through Distance Learning on Tuesday, April 14.

As we embark on Distant Learning, we recognize it can present different opportunities and challenges for families and students. While our number one goal is to continue high-quality instruction, we recognize the challenges and obstacles our students and families may face in the upcoming weeks will be exciting yet apprehensive. To prepare for this new approach to learning, it is important that we help our students adjust to the new normal and begin to develop good learning habits.

Distance Learning

Distance Learning is an experience where teachers and students are separated by place. There are two types of Distance Learning that will take place during this time: Synchronous learning and Asynchronous learning.

  • Synchronous Learning is direct interaction between students and teachers at the same time through a virtual class online. During synchronous learning, students can receive immediate feedback and clarification and teachers can provide direct instruction, and opportunities for discussions and presentations.
  • Asynchronous Learning is a time for students to work independently or collaborate with their peers. Teachers provide materials (videos, assignments, links to content, group work) that students can access at different times throughout the week and work at their own pace.

Virtual classes will be held on a tool called Blackboard Collaborate. All classes will be recorded and posted to the teacher's Blackboard site for students to reference at another time. All class assignments, due dates, and materials will be posted in FCPS 24/7 Learning (Blackboard). Teachers can still use Google Classroom to communicate with students and collect work.

Student Schedule

Below is the Distance Learning schedule. On Wednesdays and Fridays, students will participate in synchronous learning for the four core content classes (Math, English, Science, History) and High School Credit World Languages classes. Students will attend their odd period classes on Wednesdays and their even period classes on Fridays.

In order for students to continue to receive math/reading intervention and ESOL and Special Education supports, students who are currently enrolled in the courses listed below should attend synchronous learning on Wednesdays and Fridays during the period the class is listed on your student’s regular school schedule.

Additional courses participating in synchronous learning on Wednesdays and Friday include: Reading, Action Literacy, READ 180, Algebra Readiness, Personal Development, Strategies for Success (Yearlong), FAST MATH, Beginning English, Beginning ELD, Developing ELD, Focus Science, ESOL History, and ESOL Civics and Academic Language.

Electives and PE classes will provide activities on Blackboard for students to complete during asynchronous (independent) learning time. Students can complete these assignments on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays or during their class period on their own on Wednesdays and Fridays. Please note that these activities will not be face-to-face on Wednesdays and Fridays.

All teachers will have office hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays. These office hours will be communicated to you by each teacher and posted on each teacher’s Blackboard. Office hours are a time when students can sign on to Blackboard Collaborate to consult with their teachers regarding their assignments and ask questions. Teachers might also ask students to come to office hours to provide additional support or extension. All elective and PE teachers will also hold office hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays so students can connect with them “face-to-face”.

Monday

Asynchronous Learning

  • Independent or collaborative work completed by students
  • Students can access activities for their electives (P.E., Art, Music, FACS, etc.). These assignments will be posted to Blackboard

Tuesday

  • Independent or collaborative work completed by students
  • Students can access activities for their electives (P.E., Art, Music, FACS, etc.). These assignments will be posted to Blackboard

Grading

The 3rd Quarter will remain open until April 24. No student work assigned after March 13 will be graded, at the recommendation of VDOE; however, work assigned prior to March 13 will still be accepted up until April 24 in order to be applied in the calculation of students’ third quarter grades. Teachers will be working directly with students to make sure all students can finish third quarter work. Please encourage your students to complete any third quarter assignments. Additional information about the fourth quarter will be shared the week of April 13.

Getting Started - Distant Learning 101

Where can I find the assignments that my student should be working on? FCPS 24-7 Learning/Blackboard

Where will they complete the assignment? FCPS 24-7 Learning/Blackboard, Google Classroom, or an alternative application

How will I support my child? No one expects you to be the teacher. Your child may be your best guide as to when, how much and how often he/she needs your support. Don’t feel like he or she is behind. The great part of this is that there is suddenly plenty of time to work at his/her preferred pace and to work when and where he/she is most comfortable. One of the best supports is to create a visible schedule so all family members know what is expected.

School Counselors

Each school counselor will have regularly scheduled “office hours” to connect with students. Students will be able to sign up for 10-minute appointment times to speak with their school counselors. More information will be shared with students and parents by April 13.

In the meantime, parents and students can always email their counselor with any questions or concerns they may have. Don’t forget - if students are worried about him/herself or a friend in a crisis situation, the following steps need to be taken:

  1. Get help from a parent or trusted adult immediately
  2. Call 911 or report the concern to the local police by calling the Fairfax County non-emergency number 703-691-2131">(703) 691-2131
  3. Call Crisis Link at (703) 527-4077">(703) 527-4077 or text CONNECT to 855-11
  4. Please click on the link below for additional emergency services resources provided by FCPS. https://kilmerms.fcps.edu/student-services/mental-health-social-service

Virtual Parent Presentation

Please join us for a virtual parent session on Monday, April 13 at 2:00 PM. We will share information about Distance Learning and answer questions. You will participate in this meeting by Blackboard Collaborate which is the same platform students will use for their synchronous learning. The link will be sent out next week.

We are excited to begin this new learning experience with you. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions. Please take care of yourself and of each other.

3/24/2020 - Video Message to the Community

Dear Kilmer Families,

Please click the link below to see my video message to the community:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6UdcUm4s3-Y&feature=youtu.be

Below is a transcript of the message as well.

Sincerely,

Amy Miller, Principal

Transcript:

Hello Kilmer Families,

I hope this message finds you well during these uncertain times. I know the Governor’s announcement yesterday that schools will be closed for the remainder of the year made many of us feel even more uncertain.

I am particularly saddened because I was just getting to know the students and parents of Kilmer. I wanted to send you a video message as I feel it is important for you to have a face and a voice behind the emails that I have been sending out to the community. I also want you to know that as we navigate this unchartered territory, I remain committed to maintaining a strong sense of community, building relationships and connecting with you. I do have some ideas of ways for us to have virtual meet and greets and roundtable discussions. I will send you information about that in the coming weeks.

However, right now I know there are many questions about what Distance Learning will look like for our students in the months to come. As the Governor shared in his announcement yesterday, the Virginia Department of Education will be providing school districts additional guidance regarding distance continuity of learning that has a focus on equity. Dr. Brabrand shared in his letter to the community that he was meeting with the School Board in an emergency session to plan next steps. The answers to our questions are coming soon.

During this time of transition, the Kilmer Administrative Team will be meeting virtually with staff, planning for virtual teacher collaboration and professional learning focused on using virtual instructional tools. The teachers at Kilmer are so committed to the students and ensuring they receive the best education possible. It is a true honor to be part of the Kilmer team and working with our amazing staff.

I know there continues to be lots of questions right now and we don’t have a lot of answers.  What I do know is that this community is amazing, and we will navigate this situation together and come out stronger on the other side.

Please know that throughout this situation, I will continue to communicate updates promptly. Please take good care of yourselves, your families, and each other. I will be in touch soon.

Amy Miller, Principal

3/17/2020 - Building Closure and Contact Information

Printable Version

Dear Kilmer Families,

I hope you are all doing well and staying healthy! I am writing to send you some additional updates and information. As we all know, this situation continues to evolve. As it evolves, I will work to keep you informed with the most current information. As a Kilmer Community, we will continue to work through this together. What I have shared with the staff and want to share with you is the motto that, “We will do the very best we can with what we know today.” We will continue to take this situation one day at a time. What is most important is everyone’s health and safety.

Thank you

I would like to start off by thanking our amazing Kilmer Community for all of the food donations that were dropped off this past Sunday during our Drop n’ Drive food collection. We were able to pack 75 boxes of food. Yesterday, we were able to set up a sidewalk food pick-up for families to pick-up the food. Thank you all for your support!

Building Closure

On Sunday, March 15, FCPS announced that all school buildings are closed until further notice. This means Kilmer MS will not be open for students to pick up belongings until the operating status changes.

Below is the contact information for the Kilmer Administrative Team. Please do not hesitate to contact us with questions or thoughts. Email will be the most efficient way to get in touch with us. You may also call 703-846-8812 and leave a voicemail.

These resources can be accessed through the FCPS 24-7 Learning Continuity of Learning Module at http://fcps.blackboard.com or on the FCPS website at www.fcps.edu.

During the period of March 16-March 27 teachers will not assign any required work. Any activities posted will be optional and not cover any new content as per the county directive. Students will not be penalized for not engaging with optional learning activities nor will they be given extra credit for completing optional assignments. We will be receiving more guidance by March 27 about teaching and learning expectations after this initial period. For the next two weeks please focus on family health and access the optional learning resources if you choose.
