6/10/2020 - A Message from Principal, Amy Miller

June 10, 2020

Dear Parents/Guardians:

We hope this email finds you and your family well. Although it is still unclear as to what next school year will look, FCPS and Kilmer Middle School are committed to providing engaging virtual learning opportunities this summer. FCPS school buildings will remain closed through the end of July. Therefore, we will continue to provide recommended, virtual learning opportunities for students from June 29 to July 31.

Continuity of Learning Summer Practice Books and Optional Office Hours

Students currently in grades 7-8 will receive both a Mathematics and Language Arts Essentials Summer Practice Book in the mail by the end of June; digital versions of the books will also be posted on the Continuity of Learning Blackboard page. These books will provide practice activities that review essential content from the 2019-2020 school year. Students will receive a mathematics book based on the level of mathematics they took during the 2019-20 school year. The language arts book will focus on essential skills in reading, writing, grammar, mechanics and vocabulary.

A supplemental English Language Development Summer Practice Book will be sent to middle school English learners who are ELP levels 1 & 2. These books will provide English Language Development (ELD) practice activities to support and enrich language development during the summer. In addition, the Language Arts workbook that all students receive will contain an ELD section with language development activities designed for students at ELP level 3 & 4.

To support student learning from June 29 to July 31, there will be one hour per week of office hours available for each course. Office hours for mathematics, language arts, and English Language Development will be with one of our own outstanding staff members and are intended to support students with the Mathematics Essentials Summer Practice Book, the Language Arts Essentials Summer Practice Book, and the English Language Development Summer Practice Book. Attendance is recommended for students who need additional practice and support with mastering seventh or eight grade content before this upcoming school year. Students who did not make adequate academic progress are highly recommended to participate in this remediation opportunity this summer.  Parents will be contacted if their child is recommended to participate.

To register your student for office hours and receive a secure link, please complete the Continuity of Learning Registration Form  Please complete the registration form by Monday, June 22nd. Save the Date - Middle School VIP Program, June 29 - July 30

The Middle School VIP program will be going virtual for the summer!  During these unprecedented times of social distancing and virtual learning, we want to offer your child a summer experience that is safe and full of fitness, friends, fun and enrichment. FCPS and Fairfax County Department of Neighborhood and Community Services (DNCS) have teamed up to offer a 5- week virtual program for rising 7th and 8th graders in Fairfax County. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in virtual activities in the arts, music, STEM, physical fitness, cooking, games, puzzles, literature, and more – things students can do at home. The program is led by FCPS After-School Specialists and DNCS Teen/Community Center Staff. The program will include a mixture of synchronous (staff and students online together) and asynchronous (self-directed activities).

The Online Registration will be available by mid June. At that time, an email will be sent with further details/instructions.

Enrichment Websites

In addition to summer learning and transition activities, students will also have the opportunity to access enrichment and health and wellness resources created by our Librarians, Health & PE Department, and School Counselors on the Kilmer website beginning Monday, June 22.
