Junior District Honors Orchestra
Congratulations to Ellie Kim, Holly (Seongmin) Kim, Olivia Lee, Sophia Lee, Deborah (Saemee) Kim,
Christos Proctor, Daniel Chung, and Jasmine Alcorn who participated in the past weekend’s Junior District Honors Orchestra. The orchestra is by audition only. It is open to all strings students in District XII of the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association, which includes around 24 public and private schools in McLean, Vienna, Chantilly, Oakton, and Arlington. At the event, there is a junior level for middle school and a senior level for high school.
Typically, around 75 students are accepted at each of the two levels and we at Kilmer have about 250 student audition at each level. The fact that we had 8 students in the 75 total was fantastic.
The event consists of 2 days of rehearsals with a guest conductor. At the end of the two days, the students perform a concert for the public. The repertoire is typically at a higher level than the students perform at the own school and the conductor discusses advanced musical concepts that the students may not have been exposed to previously. It’s a weekend full of growth for these young musicians.
