Schoolwide Academic Support 2022/23

Advisory (4th Period)

During 4th period, students participate in Responsive Advisory Meetings addressing topics related to academic readiness, goal setting, building relationships, and communication skills. Each week one advisory meeting is dedicated to student check-ins with advisory teachers.

These check-ins are an opportunity to discuss how students are doing, grades, organization, and any other supports needed. When students are not meeting with their advisory teacher, they are using class time to check their planners, check assignments in Schoology and gradebooks in SIS StudentVUE, get organized, and send teachers messages if they have questions.

Learning Seminar (5th Period)

All students are assigned to a Learning Seminar class with a teacher. This class provides opportunities for extended learning time to meet students’ needs in a variety of ways. Some students access small group support targeting specific academic skills during this time. All students have the opportunity to request a pass to meet with a teacher when they need to ask questions, get help completing assignments, catch up on missed instruction after an absence, and complete assessments and retakes. Students may choose to stay in their Learning Seminar class to study, read, or get started on projects and assignments. Learning Seminar is also a great time for students to monitor their academic progress through StudentVue and complete any missing assignments they may have. Students can also access the library and enrichment activities (e.g., service learning projects, student groups) during this time.

Math Retake Center

The Math Department is piloting a retake center during Learning Seminar in B116. Math teachers will add a pass to a student’s agenda on the date a student will retake an assessment.

Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology Tutors

Every Friday we host 4-5 students from Thomas Jefferson High School to help tutor Kilmer students with Math. The tutors are in room G100 from 7-7:25 AM.

Teacher After School Days

All teachers stay after school at least one day a week to support students. Have your child email/speak with their teacher if they would like to stay after school.

FCPS & Tutor.com

Students have unlimited access to 24/7, on-demand, online tutoring support services through Tutor.com at no cost to families (unless they’ve been opted out). Students can connect online any time, any place, and in most K-12 subjects for however long they need. Tutoring may be on-demand and/or scheduled at a time convenient for the student and/or family.

Tutoring is focused instruction provided to students in a one-on-one format (voice and/or text chat). Tutors will focus on developing student’s strengths and capabilities in reading, mathematics, or other specified subjects. Tutoring services may be accessed before, during or after school hours and/or weekends. Please follow this link to see how it works.

ParentVue and Schoology

Parent accounts provide access to SIS (students grades) and Schoology (courses and assignments). The login information is the same for both SIS ParentVUE and Schoology. Parents and Guardians are encouraged to access both of these FCPS resources to assist their student with monitoring their academic progress.
